Is it still a man’s world and should women be waiting on one to be able to get a diamond ring? We sat down with three inspiring Kimaï clients who didn’t conform to the outdated idea of waiting for a man and instead treated themselves to a diamond.
We seem to be in a time where everyone is getting proposed to, be it on top of a mountain après ski style, privately at home or surrounded by friends and family in a room decked out with a large light-up ‘MARRY ME’ sign and a floor scattered with rose petals and candles ( I’m sure that's a complete fire hazard..) Should those of us without a ring be holding our breath and waiting for our ‘turn’? Or should we completely be turning the outdated notion that we must wait for a man to purchase one for us? It’s 2023 and not only are we breaking generational conventions when it comes to if and when we get married but also challenging the rules and traditions that surround it, namely waiting for a man to get on bended knee to receive a diamond ring.
"It's so empowering. It takes the pressure off too. You can still have the ring, it doesn't need to be linked to an engagement!"
Meet Bailey, originally from California but now a Londoner who bought herself a ring to commemorate a life milestone. You can watch her full interview here
"As women, we often struggle to celebrate ourselves"
Meet Maiko who is a Sales Director from London who bought a Billie ring to mark a huge work project achievement. You can watch her full interview here
"If I waited for a man to give me jewelry, I would have very little jewelry"
Meet Honey who is a Visual Art Photographer from London who bought the Frida ring, simply because she loved it. You can watch her full interview here
If you love the idea of treating yourself but still feel a little apprehensive about navigating styles typically for proposals we have a few tips and tricks to consider:
Design it for a different finger
Buy it for a special occasion outside of a proposal as a reminder of your achievements or special moment
So whether you’re completely new to the concept of buying for yourself or you’re already mentally crafting your own bespoke piece, it’s clear that you don’t have to wait for anyone or anything to treat yourself to something nice. There's no better time than the present to give yourself some love whether that's to mark a special occasion, celebrate an achievement or simply because you really like it.
