Wedding Bands Buying Guide

Often overlooked by their more statement counterpart; the engagement ring, wedding bands are just as important to consider for the big day. We take you through the different styles, as well as tips on what to look for when buying a wedding band. Our top tip? Go for a style that you’ll love forever, and made with materials that are kind to the planet.

Choosing a Style

When choosing a wedding band style, the most important thing is that it compliments your engagement ring. For example, if your engagement ring has a halo, then the wedding band will need to fit accordingly. The most popular option chosen by couples is an eternity style that is either a plain metal band or one set with pave stones.

There are lots of other considerations for style, such as whether you want the same metal as your engagement ring or whether you want the style to be elaborate or simple.

Wedding Band Styles

Whether you go for a bespoke design or a traditional design, these are the popular choices when it comes to wedding rings.

Plain band

A classic plain metal band with no gemstones on it is a timeless choice, it will match any style of engagement ring and is great for the practical person who doesn’t want to worry about it getting lost or damaged.

Pavé band

A band that has stones set into it all the way around. This style goes well with engagement rings that also have a pave band, or a cushion cut diamond with a halo.

Eternity band

A band that holds identically sized diamonds that go around the finger. The two types of eternity band are a channel and shared prong setting. This style also works with different diamond shapes, from baguettes to round stones.

Anniversary band

Similar to an eternity band, but the diamonds only go halfway around the ring.

Custom shape

If you went down the bespoke route or you have one of our more uniquely curved styles like the Helena or the Serena you’re going to want to look into a custom fitting wedding band. For all our curved style rings we have a matching wedding band and of course a design team on hand to make any tweaks or add personal touches.

Did you know?

Wedding bands go back to as early as the Ancient Egyptians and ever since, they have symbolized love.

Choosing a Metal

Traditionally, wedding bands have been made out of yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum and in more recent trends, rose gold.

White gold: durable and scratch-resistant. It’s more affordable than platinum but needs to be dipped every few years to keep its shiny-ness.

Yellow gold: the purest color and easiest to maintain of all the gold types. It’s also the most hypoallergenic. Although it doesn't scratch easily, yellow gold needs to be polished and cleaned regularly.

Rose gold: very durable and more affordable than the other wedding band materials. It’s not a hypoallergenic metal.

Platinum: hypoallergenic material and more durable than white gold. It’s much more expensive than the other types of wedding bands and gets scratched and dulls over time.

Wedding Band Costs

Wedding bands tend to cost less than the engagement ring, but this completely depends on the couple and their style and budget. Wedding bands range from $150 to $25,000, but of course they can be a lot more if you choose a bespoke design.

Determining your size

The easiest way to find out the right size for your wedding band is to match it to your engagement ring. Alternatively you can use a ring sizer which comes complimentary with any Kimaï ring purchase.
